LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Ernst Lubitsch. Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Una Merkel, Edward Everett Horton, George Barbier, Herman Bing. Lavish, delightful filming of Lehar operetta, with usual Lubitsch charm and handpicked cast. Infectious score still first-rate. Retitled: THE LADY DANCES.

Jeanette MacDonald is Sonia, a bubbly widow who owns 52% of every cow and cow town in the tiny European country of Marshovia. When she relocates to glittery Paris, suave ladies' man... more

D: Frank Capra. Jean Arthur, Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, Edward Arnold, Mischa Auer, Ann Miller, Spring Byington, Eddie "Rochester'' Anderson, Donald Meek, Halliwell Hobbes, Dub Taylor, Samuel S. Hinds, Harry Davenport, Charles Lane. George S. Kaufman Moss Hart play about eccentric but blissfully happy household becomes prime Capracorn, not quite as compelling today as MR. DEEDS or MR. SMITH (due to Robert Riskin's extensive rewriting), but still highly entertaining. Oscar winner for Best Picture and Director. Followed a half- century later by a TV series.

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Andre De Toth. Sterling Hayden, Gene Nelson, Phyllis Kirk, Ted de Corsia, Charles Buchinsky (Bronson), Jay Novello, James Bell, Dub Taylor, Timothy Carey. Neat little B picture about some escaped cons who try to involve a former prisonmate (who's now gone straight) in their latest heist. Actuality-style filming on L.A. locations gives this an extra boost.

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Ernst Lubitsch. Jack Benny, Carole Lombard, Robert Stack, Lionel Atwill, Felix Bressart, Sig Ruman, Tom Dugan, Helmut Dantine, Stanley Ridges. Benny has the role of a lifetime as "that great, great actor'' Joseph Tura, whose Polish theater troupe is put out of business by invading Nazis--until they become involved in espionage and find their thespian skills being put to the ultimate test. Superb black comedy scripted by Edwin Justus Mayer; the opening gag with Dugan is a gem. Lombard's final film, released after her death. Remade in 1983.

As nervy as it is hilarious, this screwball masterpiece from Ernst Lubitsch (TROUBLE IN PARADISE) stars Jack Benny (THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM) and, in her final screen appearance,... more

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: George Cukor. Gene Kelly, Mitzi Gaynor, Kay Kendall, Taina Elg, Jacques Bergerac, Leslie Phillips, Henry Daniell, Patrick Macnee. Charming, sprightly musical involving three showgirls who (via flashback) reveal their relationship to hoofer Kelly; chicly handled in all departments, with Cole Porter tunes and Oscar-winning Orry-Kelly costumes. John Patrick adapted Vera Caspary's novel. Scope.

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: John Cromwell. Dorothy McGuire, Robert Young, Herbert Marshall, Mildred Natwick, Spring Byington, Hillary Brooke. Adaptation of Arthur Pinero play about two misfits, a homely woman and a disfigured man, who find each other beautiful in the enchanted cottage. Never quite as good as you'd like it to be. Previously filmed in 1924. Some prints run 78m.

Director John Cromwell's delicate achingly romantic film is based on Sir Arthur Wing Pinero's play written in a post-World War I era of broken men returning to families who could not... more

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Albert Lewin. James Mason, Ava Gardner, Nigel Patrick, Sheila Sim, Harold Warrender, Marius Goring, Pamela Kellino (Mason). Sorry to say, a big Technicolor bore, one of writer-director Lewin's misfires, about a woman who destroys the lives of all the men around her; then mystical, otherworldly Mason materializes. Intriguing but unconvincing tale, inspired by the legend of The Flying Dutchman, a man cursed to live for all eternity until he can find a woman capable of loving him. Only real attribute is Gardner's breathtaking beauty.
