Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

Known as much for his collaborative work with designers in other fields as he was for his innovative approach to fashion, Christopher Kane brought a sense of fun and whimsy to classic fashion design. It was his ability to take creative leaps and combine such unlikely elements as snake skin print with chiffon or brilliant neon color with skinny wrap-band dresses that created his signature look and feel. Born in Newarthill, Scotland in 1982, he left for London when he had the opportunity to attend the Saint Martin's College of Arts and Fashion. He began working for London designers Russell Sage and Giles Deacon before he even graduated. An early indication of his work to come came when he caught the eye of famed European designer Donatella Versace by winning the Lancôme Color Award in 2005, a year before he graduated. The next few years were a whirlwind for Kane as he set up his own label with his sister Tammy, launched a special collection for Britain's popular clothing store TopShop and won major acclaim for his first season collection of neon bandage dresses, followed by his second season featuring leather and velvet. The next few years were a whirlwind for Kane as he set up his own label with his sister Tammy, launched a special collection for Britain's popular clothing store TopShop and won major acclaim for his first season collection of neon bandage dresses, followed by his second season featuring leather and velvet. He was named New Designer of the Year by British Fashion Awards in 2007 and was busy promoting his homeland for VisitScotland by celebrating Burns Night with a special trunk show and party. He was also at the time collaborating with jewelery designers for Swarovski, and Manalo Blahnik who created a line of shoes specifically for Kane's collection. His collections won the hearts and minds of many in Hollywood including television actress Laura Carmichael, pop sensation Rihanna and Hollywood actress Chloe Grace Moretz to name just a few. But changes were coming as the beginning of 2013 saw Kane sign an agreement to sell 51% of his luxury brand to Kering, a top French multinational company that specialized in high end retail fashion. The partnership allowed Kane and Kering to work together to develop stand-alone retail shops that would highlight the Kane name. At the end of that year, the Women's Wear Designer of the Year Award at the British Fashion Awards Show went to Christopher Kane, proving that even with collaboration he remained one of the top names in couture fashion.
