Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

Danish duo the Raveonettes have to be the only group that's ever had members of the Ronettes and the Velvet Underground guest on the same album. And that about sums up their sound, with a foot in classic '60s pop and a foot in experimental rock. Singer/guitarist Sharin Foo and multi-instrumentalist Sune Rose Wagner met in 2001 and initially performed in a conventional band lineup with bass and drums. They went high-concept on their first release Whip It On on which Wagner decided that each song had to be in B-flat minor, have only three chords and run less than three minutes (though one actually reached an epic 3:14). Not surprisingly, the result often sounded like the Stooges with a little more harmony and a lot more innocence. After building a US buzz thanks to a rave Rolling Stone review, the Raveonettes, now officially a duo with an occasional live rhythm section, made their second album with an international audience in mind. Pop veteran Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Go's) took over as producer (and eventually manager) on Chain Gang of Love which brought the pop tunes and harmonies more into focus while retaining the distorted guitars; here they brightened the sound by writing all the songs in...

Not surprisingly, the result often sounded like the Stooges with a little more harmony and a lot more innocence. After building a US buzz thanks to a rave Rolling Stone review, the Raveonettes, now officially a duo with an occasional live rhythm section, made their second album with an international audience in mind. Pop veteran Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Go's) took over as producer (and eventually manager) on Chain Gang of Love which brought the pop tunes and harmonies more into focus while retaining the distorted guitars; here they brightened the sound by writing all the songs in B-flat major instead. The single "The Great Love Sound" turned up in a Kmart ad, the closest to mainstream exposure the band ever got. They continued to streamline their sound with Pretty in Black, their most-pop oriented album, which included the above-mentioned guest stars (Ronnie Spector, the Velvets' Moe Tucker, and Suicide's Alan Vega) plus a cover of "the '60s hit "My Boyfriend's Back"  which Gottehrer wrote for the Angels. "Love in a Trashcan" became their biggest UK hit, charting at #26. Having failed to crack the Top 100 in the US, the Raveonettes settled into comfortable cult status, maintaining their mix of pop and primal electronics. After Pretty in Black the darker elements came back into their sound; the 2012 album Observator was inspired by a drug binge that Wagner had on Venice Beach, chasing the spirit of Jim Morrison (the group also contributed to a Doors tribute album in 2014). During 2016 the Raveonettes released an "anti-album" by dropping a song per month on download sites, wrapping up with the twelve-minute "Pendejo" in December. The twelve songs were collected on their early-2017 release, 2016 Atomized.
