Robert G. Newton in Treasure Island

Now that we have a global "Talk like a pirate day" its time that more people knew where the quintessential pirate speak came from. It came from one (and only one) actor by the name of Robert Newton, who took the great lines from the screenplay and turned it into something that will be forever copied. Before the 1950 release of Treasure Island there was no "pirate speak." Don't believe that? Watch all the films that preceded it that feature pirates. You might hear a bad cockney accent, or a plain old American accent, but no pirate speak. It began when Newton came up with his version of the character known as Long John Silver, a feat for which he has yet to receive enough credit.

Treasure Island was a classic growing up, as was the series Treasure Island several years later. Newton was typecast after that, but he was also good as a supporting actor in movies like Desert Rats as well. Newton was a much better actor when he was not on a "binge" as they used to say.
