Colonel Urias J. Magonnagle (Edgar Buchanan) is running for Governor, against a crooked incumbent, and glib-tongued Wally M. Jones (Phil Silvers) persaudes him to build his campaign around performances by Earl Gordon (Harry James) and his band, including vocalists Terry (Vivian Blaine) and Allen Clark (Perry Como.) The performers (including Carmen Miranda as Michelle O'Toole) perform, Magonnagle orates and the citizens are buying. The crooked political machine gets worried and a few plot twists later (as can only be performed by four screenplay writers evidently in separate rooms), Clark has replaced Magonnagle as the candidate.

The robberies on Jasper Carrol's stages have been so frequent that the stage line plans to hold a stagecoach race with the winner getting the new contract. Tom foils Cal Barker's attempt to kill him and gets a confession from him that Kurt Morley is behind the robberies. But first Tom must win the race for Carrol although Morley's stages have him greatly outnumbered.
Cullen has hired Tom to try and stop the robberies on his railroad. Knowing Cullen's secretary Holt is tipping off the gang, Tom works undercover by posing as a highwayman. To help him bring in the gang he enlists the help of the hobo DeLuxe Harry.

Returning from the war, Buck finds his younger brother in trouble. Trailing him he gets caught by Murdock who takes his letter of introduction to the Del Ray's. Posing as Buck, Murdock takes Del Ray's jewels and his daughter Jaunita. To effect Murdock's capture and to rescue Juanita, Buck now poses as Murdock.
