Mr. Devane was a horse show judge in Scottsdale, AZ in the fall/winter of 1988 or the early spring of 1989. I entered three or four classes. I believe one class was for green horses or green mares--WP, young mares, amateur/owner WP classes. In the green class, I used a running martingale on my mare. In the line-up, Judge Devane came between another contestant and myself, touched the martingale, and told the other girl that tool is what she needed to use on her horse. I believe I placed second or third in that class. In another WP class, I competed against a former employer of mine who was very mean to me while in her employment. She insulted my riding capability and knowledge of horsemanship. I beat her in that class. I placed second only because the mare would not lope on the correct lead. Judge Devane walked over to me and commented. He said something to the effect of: "I watched you and how you tried to get her on the correct lead. Every time I asked for a canter, she would not take the correct lead. You did the right thing every time by running her into the corner, stopping and restarting...I wanted her to take the right lead. That is the only reason you are placing second, but it is not your fault. It's the mare's fault. You did a great job." My head was in the clouds after receiving his compliment. Not only did I beat my former insulting boss, but I received a great compliment and confidence/ego boost from a famous horseman. That day is one of the top four highlights in my life (the other three being births of my kids). I don't know if Mr. Devane is aware of this comment board, but if someone knows how to contact him, I'd like for him to know that he really made my day! :oD
