Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

Gu quickly established himself as a preeminent cinematographer, not only in his native China, but also internationally. He has lensed films for two of China's most famous and talented Fifth Generation filmmakers, Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, on an impressive assortment of works. These include "Red Sorghum" (1987), "Life on a String" (1991) and "Farewell My Concubine" (1993), which earned Gu an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. His projects generally display a rich and complicated use of color and strikingly formalist compositions.
