Leading figure of post-World War II French cinema. Allegret revived the "poetic realism" which had colored French film of the 1930s with a trilogy of grim dramas--"Dedee" (1948), "Riptide" (1949) and "The Cheat" (1950)--all written by Jacques Sigurd. "Dedee" made a star of Simone Signoret, Allegret's wife from 1944 to 1949 and the mother of his actress daughter Catherine. His brother Marc was also a director.
