George Raft...really a gangster, not an actor...
- Lawrence Forde
Beginning with Background to Danger George Raft thought more of himself than the ticket buying public. George Raft because of his gangster connections was offered the cream of leading roles with outstanding scripts. Raft scoffed at the intended productions on one pretense or another. The role of Rick Blaine a choice and meaty role was too small for him and Ingrid Bergman in his opinion was a nothing nobody. Raft would rather associate with Owney Madden and Bugsy Siegel opting to ignore the discipline of honing the craft that eluded him his entire career. Later on, Raft appeared on the daytime variety show "The Mike Douglas Show" during that appearance Raft made the ridiculous statement that he had never won an Oscar. Raft couldn't act!
Many wooden actors in H'wood. No doubt he delivered something for someone.Bogie did make a much better star in some Raft intended films, but how 'bout the other Georges, like Brent,Tobias,Murphy,O'Brien,Macready instead in some Raft rejected films?Thought Raft very capable in this opposite Greenstreet, even if he's one dimensional in some films.A good director could help his actors give great performances, and maybe George PO'd the wrong people. He was good in Johnny Allegro, suited his talent.
Background OF Danger
This movie's unique setting, character/actors, & plot caught my attention- the final scene showing the American agent walking arm in arm with the communist agents threw it back into the Sea of the Gallilean!

Would someone please explain to me how George Raft ever got his first role as an "actor"? To call him self-concious, wooden, unconvincing, would be to compliment him. He has ruined every film I've ever seen, featuring him meerly by being in it. He was chosen for the role of Rick in Casablanca,,,maybe it looked good on paper...ZigZag no doubt. The fact that he refused the role suggests there is a God.
