Although only Joseph Losey and Stanley Ellin were given screen credit for the film's screenplay when the picture was initially released, blacklisted writers Ring Lardner, Jr. and Hugo Butler co-wrote the screenplay with Losey and Ellin. The writing credits of Lardner and Butler were restored by the WGA in 2000. Hollywood Reporter production charts add Janet Brandt, Joe Mill, Renny McEvoy, Walter Gross, Mabel Smaney and June Smaney to the cast, but their appearance in the final film has not been confirmed. Portions of the film were shot at California Studios, CA. The Big Night was the first film in which actor John Barrymore Jr. received above title screen credit, marking his first major role. As stated in a June 5, 1951 Hollywood Reporter article, Mauri Lynn's performance singing "Am I Too Young" marked her film debut.
