Barbarella (1968) on Criterion Collection DVD
- Jeffrey Kenison
Lately, I've been considering that this science fiction classic ought to be part the Criterion Collection on DVD. I like Jane Fonda.
Very exciting and hip!
"This film is very exciting and one of the coolist n hippest sex/porn films of its time...".Indeed!I watched this movie with my boyfriend in 1968, in a theater.I think, (I'm sure) that Chuck got a hard-on when Jane Fonda took off nearly all of her clothes. Not all, she still had some sort of a veil on. If I can stay up late, I'll watch it on TV and see if it is still that exciting.
Exploitation or Empowerment?
Now that Jane Fonda has become an excellent memoirist, we have a better idea of how this movie came about and the circumstances of its making. For many years she internalized the opinion of some critics that this movie was a regrettable mistake, but the passage of time has allowed it to work its magic on her, as it has with many of us. One thing which should be remembered is that this is a thoroughly French film. The comic strip, though familiar to some Americans, was French in origin and the movie was the pet project of Roger Vadim, Fonda's French husband at the time. The shock value it may have had for American audiences may have prevented many from seeing what a fine fantasy film this is, admittedly with blatant erotic overtones. It's by no means perfect and it apparently took a slew of writers to cobble it together, yet its appeal has by now spanned a number of generations. One of those writers was Terry Southern, whose own "Candy" (Think "Candide".) featured a similarly naive heroine beset by predatory (in one way or another) males and, in Barbarella's case, a predatory female, the bewitching Anita Pallenberg. It's satire is generally sound and its undercurrent of sexual liberation was very much in touch with the time. It's also very "trippy" and there couldn't have been a happier coincidence of mind-bending film and mind-bent audience in 1968. And as far as progressive social attitudes, it was very much "on trend", in my opinion. Though some at a time when many women were literally burning their bras probably rightly cringed to see such a display as Jane Fonda in a molded plastic bustier, where really is the difference between Barbarella and Wonder Woman, an icon which was later embraced by the Women's Liberation movement? You go, girl!

A rather fun and campy diversion. It's fascinating in an odd sort of way. I have a hard time imagining Jane Fonda opting for a role like this. It is most certainly a unique film and can't think of any film quite like it. It doesn't always work, but fun anyway.
first i would like to thank you for playing the original i rented the movie and they gave me a remake. i seen it in 68 and liked it but today it didn't seem to be all that great of a movie i guess you have to be young to enjoy it. it took guts for TCM to run a movie with as much nudity in it as this has. you wouldn't think Turner would alow this movie to be played with his relationship to Jane Fonda. keep the good old movies coming as i watch TCM for all my movie enjoyment. the new ones are a waste of time and money. thank you
The film Jane Fonda would like to forget
I'm betting that if Jane Fonda had to do it all over again, BARBARELLA would be a role she would skip. This movie is anethma to everything she stands for today. This is pure sexploitation and Fonda is the subject; not good for the feminist she is today. As to the movie itself, the script is rotten, the acting worse. This movie is simply a good cult film for its sexplotation of Fonda and satirical take on society at the time.
