Johnny Peters, an employee of the Express Office, owes Bull Lanson a gambling debt, and just as Bull is about to blackmail Johnny into telling him when the next gold shipment will be in the office, Johnny is seriously wounded in a barroom fight. Bull kidnaps Johnny, and they are followed by Johnny's sister Joan, who pursues them on her buck board, but loses a wheel in the pursuit. She is rescued by Ken Smith, who takes her to Bull's hideout and introduces himself to the gang as "Lightnin'" Smith, a wanted outlaw. A doctor is called in to treat Johnny's wounds, and when he leaves, Joan and Ken attempt to get a message out with him--a note warning the Express Office of the impending robbery. Slick, one of Bull's henchmen, however, finds the note, and the gang successfully robs the safe. In a bloody shootout, the sheriff stops some of the gang, but Bull escapes. When he reaches the hideout, Bull meets the real "Lightnin'" Smith, and together they try to fight off Ken but are unsuccessful. After the sheriff's posse arrives to arrest the criminals, Ken explains that he is actually a government agent and proposes marriage to Joan.
