Chillin' with the Big Chill
With great music, great cast, and great charm, this movie makes the great point that our intense relationships of college give way to real life, so that meeting your former college lovers and friends years later can make you wonder what you ever saw in them. It is indeed easy to bond with an intense clique in college where everyone is relatively equal in a world that consists only of campus and youthful immaturity and idealism, without issues of money or responsibility. But the real world poses entirely different challenges and how those college graduates deal with adult life makes them into very different people than their college selves. In this well-crafted example, the former clique of college 60's activists and lovers find that their lives went in very different directions after graduation. Some don't like each other's adult selves very much. Some are repulsed by their former lovers; some look to use former friends/lovers. Some are happy, some aren't. Some are wistful for the easy college days, some have matured and accept their lives with satisfaction. Some built good lives which they appreciate, some have good lives which they don't appreciate, and some couldn't make it as responsible adults. Those of us with happy college memories of youthful cliques can relate to this movie and recognize ourselves, even if we weren't caught up with the 60's activism. Which of the 7 characters are you? How would you get along with your college friends/lovers if you met them today?
I love " The Big Chill" and would love to see a sequel with all the original characters/stars to see how they kept going after the suicide. Has anyone suggested such a movie??
the most ego driven generation..maybe.
it is a kasdan story..so it may just stop as opposed to a definitive ending.
Fabulous music, great storyline!
If it was just the music playing, I'd give it 5/5 but, because the film is that good too, I give it 10/10! This film was before Facebook and before the Internet was in wide usage. It was very easy to graduate from college and lose track of those you were close to back in the '60s and this is more than borne out in this film. Hells bells! People have all this technology today and still lose track of those they cared about in college! You marry, you move, your views of the world change, you have kids - things change! One of the most interesting notes about this film is that everyone who was in it went on to become a real star! The actors are all just that good! This is THE ensemble cast from which all other films should take their cue when they make a film such as this one. What I really like about this film is that the characters all reassess their lives and their choices because of Alex's death. This follows real life, as many of us have done the same thing. This is a great film for so many reasons!
The Big Chill
- Dashiell Barnes
A nostalgic dramadey that inspired the TV series "Thirtysomething ." A group of friends are reunited following the suicide of one of their friends, played by Kevin Costner. Close was the only performer who earned a Oscar nomination among a fine cast who bicker & reminisce with each other. The Oscar-nominated script combines equal parts humour & sadness without sinking into sentimentality. A funny, fine film that's always engaging. I give it a 5/5.
Nice music, nice cast, ho hum plot
- Oliver Cutshaw
The movie is an obvious remake of the Return of the Secaucus Seven with a nice soundtrack thrown in. Great cast, especially William Hurt but the plot goes in too many directions. One has to ask, of all these so called activists none are still active? Also why does it seem that none of these folks have been in touch with each other for years in some scenes, then in others they obviously are still fairly familiar with their lifestyles. Still the moive is fun and does get one thinking about the values of friends and family and does make you wonder where all those old buddies from college went.
Great Movie Must Watch
The story line is great and so is the cast. They assembled I think the best cast they could have. Just the way the people interact with each other is good. I know I will watch tonite.
