Gene and Frog, out to stop a bunch of cattle rustlers, assume the identities of what they believe to be dead bandits, which soon gets them in big trouble.
Gene Autry and his pal Frog leave Gene's ranch to follow two rustlers, the Apache Kid and Black Jim, who have been terrorizing the range. En route, the outlaws shoot two lawmen, and exchange clothes with them. When Gene and Frog find the bodies, they decide to take the rustlers' clothing and, disguised as wanted outlaws, head for the border. They succesfully identify Joe Stafford as the boss behind the rustling gang, but when Joe's niece, Rosa Montero, and his stepdaughter Mary mistake Gene and Frog for the Apache Kid and Black Jim, they turn them in to the deputites. The deputies turn out to be the real outlaws in disguise. Gene and Frog escape their captors, and with the help of Gene's partner, Buffalo Bradey, and a group of singing cowhands, who eventually reveal themselves to be rangers, the rustlers are captured. When Stafford is killed, Gene and his posse leave their sweethearts behind and depart.
