  • "There Will Be Blood" is a great film

I think this is one of the best movies of recent years. I'm a big fan of Paul Thomas Anderson, and I think this is his best, so far. He's only 47, so I hope he'll be directing for several more decades. Daniel Day Lewis's portrayal of Daniel Plainview is frankly terrifying; he's a monster of single-minded greed and cruelty. Paul Dano's evangelist preacher character is also pretty disturbing, in typical creepy Paul Dano fashion. The conflict between them comes to a shocking, terrible conclusion in the bowling alley of Plainview's mansion. The cinematography/locations are wonderful, and the oil well fire scene is terrifying and spectacular. The TCM article on this movie is excellent. Day-Lewis's claim that he was not imitating John Huston's voice/manner of speaking is is not really believable; if that's the case, he does the best unintentional impression of Huston ever!

say all the bad stuff about the main character that you want to.. but at least he showed up for work and did not take so many vacations ..unlike Stephen Colbert.

Like all films from this director ("Boogie Nights" excepted) the blood comes with generous swatches of boredom. Lots of shots and scenes that at first glance seem profound but which are, upon closer examination, pretentious.

Outstanding movie man. One of the top 3 films of 2007 which was an outstanding year overall. Most on here know the story of the movie by now, so I'll just say that Daniel Day Lewis delivers one of the captivating performances of all time. Yeah, I know there are complaints that this movie is nothing outside of Daniel Plainview's character. But this is a character study and really it has more to offer. The cinematography is first rate and the music is gripping. Also, I personally feel that Paul Dano plays off of Lewis quite well. They deliver some very memorable scenes. I guess I could understand if some find him annoying, but I think him being annoying was part of the point. So I can't hold it against the cat. Also, there are plenty of quotable lines from the oil man who is rapidly turning into a nihilistic selfish old man. It ranks right up there with De Niro as Travis Bickle IMO as one of the top performances of all time. I often link There Will Be Blood with Taxi Driver. Both are intense, dark, and slow on the move... But they're also 2 of the best movies of all time with 2 of the greatest performances of all time. The movie is not for everybody, but I think everybody should give it a shot. You will not find characters to root for, but you get the joy of watching two greedy people bash each other with a shovel until only one is left standing.
