i remember watching this movie as a teenager, and it still packs a punch today. slightly crude in it's approach, but the moral still rings true. love seeing Ann Sheridan and Dick Foran as well. Joe Sawyer was the classic redneck.

Brave bad guy from Bogart

Bogart was still not the big star he would become in the 40's, otherwise he may have turned down playing this unsavory character. But as a contract player he had little say in what roles to play, and he makes the best of it here. No mean feat to play a violent bigot and still keep some sympathy from the audience, and he does pull it off here. The message of the picture somewhat overshadows the credibility of the drama, and the other actors are either all good or all bad characters, but Bogart's performance makes it worthwhile watching.

Wow, what a great Bogart performance, excellent story. Intense, well directed, not too long and has a great pace. Good supporting cast, snappy dialogue. Fine classic crime drama.
