Very enjoyable with Welles clearly enjoying himself. Emphasis on Ham in the performance, but extremely watchable!!!

Did anyone else notice that the pin, or emblem on Orson Wells hat in this movie was exactly (or very similar) to the Masonic Lodge emblem?

It's not Citizen Kane, and I suppose nothing else could ever be...but this film is still just as epic in scope. Kudos to Welles for using French history to continue exploring the themes of power, corruption and lost youth. This is a very creative and intelligently conceived production. Sure, it has its weaknesses along the way...occasional low sound quality in some scenes that were filmed in large on-location rooms instead of having been done on soundstages. And there is also Welles' obligatory magic scenes which seem a bit tedious and well, childish. Still, the movie does sparkle thanks in part to the ambitious concept and the rest of the cast's eagerness to support Welles in this endeavor. The courtroom scenes are very effective at the end of the picture and remind one of similar such scenes in The Lady from Shanghai. Also, the scenes along the turret echo his character's climactic rooftop fall from grace in his earlier work The Stranger. It's interesting that Welles seems to enjoy playing these monsters. As a result, he gets to die on-screen, more than most actors, in some very unique ways.

Is there a possibility that this movie will ever be available on DVD or VHS? I saw this over twenty years ago and have never forgotten Welles' performance. His expressive eyes are like magnets. My family and I watched Tomorrow is Forever the other day and as usual his acting is superb.PLEASE HAVE IT AVAILABLE ON DVD or at least put it on Turner!!!!Thanks
