Charlotte, the bourgeois wife of an airplane pilot, Pierre, is preoccupied with the external manifestations of fashion and sexuality. She is having an affair with Robert, an actor to whom she has promised to make a decision about leaving her husband. She and Robert make love at his apartment. She then takes a circuitous route by car and taxi before picking up her young stepson, Nicolas, from school. She takes Nicolas to meet Pierre and his guest, Roger Leenhardt, at an airfield. After dinner husband and wife discuss life, love, and her lover and then make love. The next morning Charlotte confirms that she is 3 months pregnant. Robert telephones to arrange their afternoon meeting--he will leave soon to go on tour with his company in a production of Bérénice . Madame Céline, Charlotte's maid, talks of her own very satisfying sex life. Charlotte goes to a swimming pool and overhears a conversation between two teenagers about sex. She goes to the doctor for advice about her pregnancy; in the middle of a lecture about contraception and love, Charlotte tells him that she does not know who the father is. Charlotte meets Robert as planned at the Orly Airport cinema, and they go to a motel. Charlotte tells him that she cannot make the decision, and Robert says their affair is over. Charlotte seems to agree but appears to be unsure.
