This movie gives a realistic picture of the transition of times, people, and events...the little changes of each day that add up to death and destruction. What a powerful movie, whose lessons should not be lost on today's Trump followers. This movie is incredibly powerful in it's monotonous, boring, step-by-step transition of average people into a hellish system. Should be compulsory for every American in these chaotic times.

I cannot add any more to the previous reviews....just a profound and beautiful piece of cinema.

  • Please play again, soon!!

This movie was so bittersweet. Thanks for showing it. And hope to see it again in rotation. You can see where it's heading, but you can't turn away. The scene of them dancing broke my heart.

THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET, after more than 40 years, is even better than I remembered -- what did this American teenager know from Czech literary irony back in 1965?This is a surprisingly funny, eventually throat-catching tragedy of how great events finally affect the constructed lives of average people, and what they are able tell themselves until they are slapped in the face with what must be. What really socks it home: irony without cynicism - there is enough goodness among some of these neighbors and associates to prevent us from feeling superior to some backward Slovakian Town Without Pity. Comically, painfully human, and the cast - led by vivid Everyman Josef Kroner and luminous Ida Kaminska(as the nearly deaf, profoundly good, beloved old Jewish shopowner carefully protected from reality) - is just fantastic...Thanks a million,TCM!
