I remember going to the West Coast premeire of TGIF in SF. We were all very excited because the soundtrack album was already out and getting alot of air play in SF, and most of the soundtrack's stars were there. We thought this is the next "Saturday Night Fever", but after seeing the film we said, at least the music was good. A 3 album soundtrack is nothing to put down and Donna Summer's most famous song went on to win the Oscar....who would have thought!!
i cant believe it won an oscar either but i've seen a lot worse movies. i think this movie has its place in history.the soundtrack is completely awesome; donna summers and the commadores performances make it worth seeing.i sat up to watch it and fell asleep and missed the beginning so i hope you will play it again and maybe at a decent hour. thanks
I happened to turn TCM on at 4 in the morning and this is what was playing. I was in disbelief. For some reason it's nagged at me enough that I had to come looking to see if there was a page for this garbage at tcm.com. I read Jay's review and I'm in shock at the thought this thing won any award, let alone an oscar! I can't imagine for what! Just because something was captured on film doesn't mean it's worth watching... or even worth saving. I have to think that this film wouldn't even entertain Jeff Goldblum. I just don't have enough words to express all the negative thoughts and feelings I have about this kind of junk being aired on TCM... so I'll spare everyone of anymore of it.
Thank God It's Friday (1978)
Certainly one of the worst movies to ever win an Oscar. Juvenile, silly and very shallow. Rarely funny with exaggerated characters. Very dated now to boot, but even in 1978 it stunk.
