Tyler Duane is expelled from West Point shortly after the Civil War when his brother, a Union officer, is accused of stealing Army funds. Determined to return the money, Tyler rides to a Texas town seeking his brother, who has joined a band of Confederate soldiers. In town Tyler befriends Jeff Shelby, the rowdy son of preacher Sam Shelby, and Morgan Coe, a young man who was reared by Comanches. Morgan dances with Lily Glendenning at a church dance, but Lily's father, a cattle baron who disapproves of Morgan, sends his gunman to break up the couple. In the ensuing fight, Glendenning's man is killed, and Tyler, Morgan, and Jeff flee. Lily meets Morgan out of town, and Sam Shelby marries them. All agree to help Tyler find his brother, who is headed toward Apache territory, and recover the money. En route they are joined by Martha Jane Canary, a rancher who has been rustling Glendenning's cattle. The group, pursued by Glendenning and his men, finds Tyler's brother murdered, apparently by the soldiers in a squabble over the money. By the time Tyler and his friends catch up with the soldiers, the patrol has suffered an Apache attack. Greed over the money causes tension to mount within the civilian group; and Lily and Morgan realize that they married in defiance only. Glendenning and his men arrive as the Indians are turning their attention to Tyler's group. In the melee both Lily's father and Morgan are killed. Tyler recovers the stolen money and plans to clear his name, then return to Texas to settle down with Lily.
