Treasures from the Disney Vault - 12/20

TCM is honored to present another installment in our ongoing Treasures from the Disney Vault series, a showcase of classics from the Walt Disney Library. Once again, the celebrated film critic, historian, and Disney expert Leonard Maltin serves as host introducing a night of TCM premieres.

This installment features two shorts: the Mickey Mouse cartoon Brave Little Tailor (1938), an adaptation of the fairy tale The Valiant Little Tailor and an OscarĀ® nominee for Best Short Subject, Cartoons; and Tricks of Our Trade (1957), an episode of the Disneyland TV series in which Walt Disney explains advances in animation, including techniques to make body and clothing movements appear more fluid, and the development of multi-plane cameras to create the illusion of depth.

The remaining attractions are feature-length films. The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (1952) is a live-action movie (the second for Disney after 1950's Treasure Island), with Richard Todd as Robin, Joan Rice as Maid Marian and Peter Finch as the Sheriff of Nottingham. The Sign of Zorro (1960) was edited into a feature from the successful Disney TV series, Zorro, with Guy Williams in his star-making role as the title character. Toby Tyler (1960) stars Kevin Corcoran as Toby, a 10-year-old boy who runs away from home to join the circus, with Zorro regulars Henry Calvin and Gene Sheldon in supporting roles.

The musical fantasy Pete's Dragon (1977), combining live action and animation, focuses on an orphaned boy (Sean Marshall) who befriends a dragon. The song "Candle on the Water" was OscarĀ®-nominated and the formidable cast includes Helen Reddy, Mickey Rooney, Shelley Winters and Jim Dale. Fuzzbucket (1986) is a made-for-TV movie about a lonely 12-year-old boy (Chris Hebert) who befriends a strange little creature that may be imaginary.
